Pregnancy vitamins - What does my body need?
This week, we're all about pregnancy & nutrition or nutritional supplements: What can I eat? What should I avoid? And what are the most important pregnancy vitamins?
Increased nutrient requirements during pregnancy:
The most important question for expecting mothers is whether the nutrient requirements change during pregnancy and for which nutrients an increase is necessary.
The answer is quite simple, because for almost all nutrients there is an increased need during pregnancy and even during breastfeeding!
The increase in need increases depending on the trimester.
Thus, the increased nutrient requirement in the 1st trimester is still about 100 kcal/day, in the 2nd trimester about 300 kcal/day, in the 3rd trimester 500 kcal/day, and during breastfeeding even 500-600 kcal/day. That's a total of about 77,000 kcal extra.
This sounds like a lot at first, but one must not forget that all nutrients can only reach the fetus through the placenta, because the maternal bloodstream delivers nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.
These pregnancy vitamins are particularly important:
We want to bring some simplicity into the information chaos "supplements in pregnancy" and therefore show you a short overview of nutrients that are particularly important in pregnancy:

What supplements should be avoided during pregnancy?
In general, an adequate supply of all vitamins and nutrients is very important during pregnancy. Nevertheless, experts advise caution when it comes to supplementation or an excess of vitamin A and vitamin D. For example, taking more than 3 mg of vitamin A daily is said to increase the risk of malformations. An overdose of vitamin D, on the other hand, can increase the risk of food allergies in the child, according to studies.
Biotin during pregnancy
The supply of biotin during pregnancy is quite important, because biotin is involved in many metabolic processes. Thus, supplementation is not harmful to the unborn child. If you want to learn more about biotin we have collected more information under a separate page on this topic.
